SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) – The measles outbreak in Michigan continues to spread and 39 confirmed cases have now been confirmed in this state, all in the Greater Detroit area.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, five more cases were confirmed in Oakland County, bringing the total to 38. There is also a confirmed case in Wayne County.
Infected people are between 8 months and 63 years old, according to health officials, who gave no additional details about the patients.
Important to note: Dozens of shops, schools and other public buildings have been identified as exhibition sites, which means that anyone who went there on or around a certain date could have been infected. A complete list of known Oakland County exhibition sites is listed. AT THIS LINK.
New information: In addition, the Indiana State Department of Health has confirmed a measles case unrelated to the Michigan outbreak in his state, with exposure sites located in Sturgis, Michigan. Anyone who visited these places on March 31 may have been exposed and are invited to watch for measles signs:
• Holy Angels Catholic Church – 402 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091
• San Miguel Grocery Store – 211 Jacob Street, Sturgis, MI 49091
• Walmart Supercenter – 1500 St. Centerville Sturgis, MI 49091
What should you do? Measles is a highly contagious disease transmitted by person-to-person contact and by air. Doctors and CDC say that the best way to avoid getting measles is to make sure you are vaccinated.
