Across the country, cases of the virus have dropped precipitously in recent weeks. The national seven-day moving average for new cases has fallen 40% since early September, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
But in North Dakota and several other upper Midwestern and Western states, the number of viruses has increased over the same period. North Dakota ranks behind only Alaska and Montana in new cases per capita over the past seven days, according to the CDC.
With nearly 4,500 confirmed active cases, North Dakota hit its peak in the delta’s rise on Thursday and its highest level of active cases since last December. North Dakota health centers continue to operate near critical capacity due to a convergence of non-coronavirus admissions, staff shortages and increasing hospitalizations in the Delta.
Here are the rates of cases, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations in North Dakota as of Thursday. Since all data is preliminary, some figures and totals may change from day to day.
Statewide case rate
- NEW CASES REPORTED: 709
- ACTIVE CASES: 4,490
- DAILY POSITIVITY RATE: 7.3%
- TOTAL KNOWN CASES DURING THE PANDEMIC: 136,433
- TOTAL RECOVERED DURING THE PANDEMIC: 130,309
Children under 12, a demographic not yet eligible for vaccination, accounted for 703 of North Dakota’s active cases on Thursday, as well as two of the state’s virus hospitalizations. More than a quarter of North Dakota’s active cases are residents under the age of 20.
Burleigh County, which includes Bismarck, had the best-known active cases on Thursday, with 893. Cass County, which includes Fargo, had 877, and Stark County, which includes Dickinson, had 368.
The state’s 14-day moving average positivity hit 8% on Thursday, more than a point higher than in early September and its highest level since December 2020.
Hospitalizations, death
The Health Ministry updated the figures on Thursday to reflect a higher number of recent hospitalizations than previously reported. According to the latest data, North Dakota recently peaked at 197 hospitalizations for the virus over the weekend. Hospitalizations remain close to their highest level since last September, dropping slightly to 178 in recent days.
A child five years or younger was hospitalized with the virus on Thursday, along with three children between the ages of six and 14.
A total of 14 staffed intensive care beds were available statewide, according to the latest updates to the state health department’s database. The two hospitals in Bismarck only had one intensive care bed and no inpatient beds were available. Fargo had seven intensive care beds and 12 inpatient beds.
