The 49ers are looking to extend their winning streak in their first home game against the Philadelphia Eagles in their home opener on Sunday. Let’s take a look at five players who need to make an impact.
Brandon Aïyuk
It was painful to see Aiyuk not being involved in the offense last week. As a fan, I wondered what was Kyle Shanahan thinking? Nonetheless, the likely reason was that Aiyuk missed ten days of training paired with Trent Sherfield’s rise to camp and preseason games.
Aiyuk needs to be on the pitch for this attack to consistently hit explosive plays. But Aiyuk has to hold on. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel praised Aiyuk for his efforts in training on Thursday, saying: “[Aiyuk] answering this week he rode his roads hard, accurately and it got better with training, so that’s very encouraging.
It’s good to hear that Aiyuk hasn’t lost his confidence.
Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
I wrote that Flannigan-Fowles was the most intriguing linebacker on the list. And now he has a chance to show what he can do. Azeez Al-Shaair has made his presence felt against the Lions, and we need Flannigan-Fowles to have that same energy.
My main concern with DFF is his ability to defend the race. The appearance of the defensive tackle improves the jam of the run, but Flannigan-Fowles worries me when I beat blocks. Overall, DFF’s athleticism will benefit him in covering the man and the zone.
Trey’s sermon
Sermon is expected to make his rookie debut on Sunday. Elijah Mitchell showed he is here to stay with a dynamic performance last week. Sermon must show 49er fans why San Francisco traded him.
Pass protection is a way for Sermon to move up the depth chart. JaMycal Hasty struggled last week, and Jimmy Garoppolo saved him a few times by going up in the pocket or getting rid of the ball.
Sermon has the opportunity to be a key contributor this season, especially with the loss of Raheem Mostert. Showing that he can become a consistent wide receiver with explosive runs will help his stock as well.
Zach kerr
I didn’t think Kerr would make it through the cuts of 53 men. Kerr didn’t have his hottest game against the Lions. He got pushed around by Frank Ragnow, and it won’t be easier against Jason Kelce.
Kerr wasn’t the only one to be moved to the linebacker’s lap. Several defensive tackles had weak reps against the Lions’ inside offensive line. However, when Kerr was signed he was seen as a good racing executioner. Moreover, if Javon Kinlaw is absent again, he is currently questionable for Sunday’s game. As a result, San Francisco will need Kerr to play at a much higher level.
Kyle juszczyk
Juszczyk could have a big game if he’s targeted. The Eagles couldn’t keep George Kittle last year, and I expect them to play differently this year. This is when Juszcyzk’s ability becomes a factor.
Juszczyk is a great pass catcher as well as a great run blocker. It’s time for Shanahan to change it and give Juszczyk some TE2 reps. Ross Dwelly has improved as a receiver, but Juszczyk is more dynamic.

Can the 49ers get extra value from Juszczyk?
Juszczyk is underutilized which hinders the success of offenses and limits its real return on investment. He signed a five-year / $ 27 million contract in March. It is for him to be more than a decorated offensive lineman. Juszczyk needs more opportunities as a wide receiver.
