The New England Patriots were back on the training grounds Sunday for their 10th training camp practice of this year. The session was physical with several players suffering from apparent injuries along the way. While departures from center David Andrews, tight end Hunter Henry and long snapper Joe Cardona were some of the biggest stories of the day, there were also some standout performances.
With that said, let’s take a look at who stood out on Sunday for better or worse.
Winners: WR N’Keal Harry and WR Kristian Wilkerson
N’Keal Harry and Kristian Wilkerson both have had busy days. With Nelson Agholor not in training for undisclosed reasons, the two youngsters saw a lot of action.
Harry continues to make highlighted reel catches, resulting in an impressive reception over Joejuan Williams in a 1v1 which saw him fully extend for a deep touchdown. While he only landed one catch during teamwork, he once again stood out in 1 on 1 and 3 on 3.
Wilkerson, meanwhile, was targeted 11 times in team drills and finished with 7 receptions, a record for the team that day. The sophomore continues to push hard for the Patriots’ 53-man roster – especially since he once again worked with veterans special teams Matthew Slater and Justin Bethel.
Winners: QB Mac Jones
The 15th overall selection in this year’s draft may not have been perfect, but he again saw a massive number of reps on Sunday. Jones attempted 23 assists in team drills versus Cam Newton’s 16, and he completed 17 with an interception as well as a fall.
He’s still got a ways to go, but the rookie seems to be getting more comfortable executing New England’s notoriously tough attack.
Losers: CB Jalen Mills, CB Joejuan Williams and CB Michael Jackson Sr.
The Patriots have one of the best starting outside cornerback duos in the NFL, but the depth behind Stephon Gilmore and JC Jackson is somewhat suspect. With Gilmore still on the physically unable to play list, neither Jalen Mills, Joejuan Williams or Michael Jackson stood out.
Sunday, all three experienced negative moments. Mills was beaten on a deep touchdown by Kristian Wilkerson (the two were also involved in a quick brawl), while Williams and Jackson had their fair share of problems against N’Keal Harry in 1v1. Jackson recorded more A Mac Jones interception later, but the main thing remains despite the choice: The depth of the New England outside cornerback looks like a weakness for now.
Winners: DT Christian Barmore & DT Carl Davis
Back on the training grounds after missing two sessions last week, Christian Barmore picked up where he left off. The second-round rookie continues to be a handful during the 1v1s, and he once again showed his combination of power and explosiveness on Sunday.
Carl Davis, meanwhile, continues to establish himself as a low-key player to watch. The sophomore Patriot, who was re-signed via a one-year free agency deal, won his two 1-on-1s – against Marcus Martin and Alex Redmond – and later looked good on the job as well. at 11 against 11.
