A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Chiba prefecture in northwestern Japan on Thursday evening, east of the capital Tokyo, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The quake was measured at an initial depth of 80 kilometers (50 miles). The earthquake was felt strongly in Tokyo, according to CNN teams on the ground.
Tokyo-based CNN reporters said the earthquake was “a heartbeat” and very strong.
“We have a security alert app on our phones. It started ringing moments before the earthquake saying “an earthquake is coming”. The shaking was really strong. It looked like the house was going to collapse, ”correspondent Blake Essig said.
Picture frames, glasses and dishes fell from the walls and shelves, he said. “My heart was really pounding. “
Another CNN correspondent in Tokyo, Selina Wang, said the sustained shaking lasted for more than 30 seconds. An alarm in his apartment building urged residents to stay calm and reminded them that the structure was earthquake resistant.
