Henderson, North Carolina – Six residents of a Vance County nursing home died from COVID-19 in 48 hours earlier this week.
According to a public health update from Granville-Vance released Thursday, Senior Citizens Home Inc. in Henderson has recorded eight deaths in total, with six coming Tuesday and Wednesday.
A woman who lost her grandmother here this week tells me that even the slightest connection was stolen from her because she didn’t know her grandmother had the virus until it was too late.
One of those deaths was Una Mae Daye, 90.
“It’s heartbreaking, it’s really heartbreaking. She just celebrated her 90th birthday, ”her granddaughter Reneka Colbert said.
Colbert feels like every connection was stolen from her because she wasn’t told her grandmother had the virus until it was too late.
Colbert said she was never told her grandmother was seriously ill. It was when someone called to check on their Tuesday that they received the heartbreaking news.
“It’s hard to lose someone, but it’s heartbreaking and it hurts a little more that it is like this,” she said.
In just 48 hours, six people were lost. Three people died on November 17 – an 88-year-old man and women aged 86 and 90. On November 18, three women died, aged 80, 97 and 99.

In Vance County, 335 active cases of the new coronavirus have been reported this week, about 10% of which are in long-term care facilities. Thirty-four people have died while in long-term care facilities in the county. In addition to the eight at the Home for the Aged, 12 died at the Kerr Lake Nursing Home and 14 died at the Pelican Nursing Home.
Data released this week by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services shows Vance County has “substantial” spread of the coronavirus, with an average of around 465 cases per 100,000 people over the past 14 days, and a 9% positivity rate among those tested for the coronavirus.
Coronavirus hospitalizations hit record 1,571
Nearly 5,000 people (4,979) have died from the virus statewide since the start of the pandemic, and 1,571 others were treated for COVID-19 in North Carolina hospitals on Friday.
About 75% of regular hospital beds and 80% of those available in the state’s intensive care units were occupied, most by patients who do not have the coronavirus.
The state reported 3,688 new cases of the virus diagnosed on Friday.
