SAN DIEGO, California Six people were injured in a San Diego prison riot on Friday night, a spokesman for Cal Fire said.
The riot took place at the Richard J. Donovan Penitentiary, Captain Thomas Shoots told CNN.
"About 100 detainees were in the yard at the time, but Cal Fire had enough resources and the situation is stabilized," he said.
It is unclear whether the six wounded are detainees.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said that the riot started around 8:30 pm
In a press release, the CDCR said: "The staff immediately ordered the participants in several riots to stop fighting and the police used several sets of less than lethal methods of using force to quell the disturbance."
Corrections officials confirmed that four inmates were injured enough to require hospitalization, including puncture wounds and bruises.
No staff members were injured, the authorities said.
All six patients were evaluated and two of the six were airlifted to receive treatment for serious injuries, Shoots said.
Although Cal Fire is designated for forest firefighting, the agency says it also responds to emergencies such as train wrecks, hazardous materials spills, water rescues, firefighting missions, and firefighting. search and rescue and civil unrest.
