In the Sunday edition of 60 minutes, journalist Bill Whitaker immersed himself in the world of deepfakes and synthetic media, where artificial intelligence is used to create fake but hyperrealistic images and videos.
Whitaker had a deepfake video of himself made that set him back 30 years and even had the ability to remove his mustache. He also had a synthetic avatar made of himself that was able to pronounce words he had never spoken, only typed into a computer, exactly as he would say them.
While deepfakes can be used for fun, like Tom Cruise’s popular deepfakes on TikTok, Whitaker spoke to one of the first people to write a book on the subject, Nina Schick, who called the technology “game changer” when it comes to misinformation. . Mainly because of the speed with which it is changing.
“In five to seven years, we’re basically envisioning a trajectory where any creator, therefore, a YouTuber, a TikToker, will be able to create the same level of visual effects that is only available to the Hollywood studio. the richest in resources. today, ”said Schick.
Whitaker pointed out that most deepfakes are protected by free speech and that legislation has been ubiquitous in different parts of the country. The problem is that not only is the government trying to keep up with the rapid evolution of technology, but the general public at large still does not know what this technology is and what it is capable of.
Some viewers took to Twitter with reactions ranging from “mind blowing” to “being awake” to issuing an even harsher warning of how potentially dangerous this could be.
Schick said just having a better understanding of what this technology is would be a good place to start, as the company deals more and more with it in the future.
“A lot of people still don’t know what a deepfake is, what synthetic media is, that it’s now possible,” said Schick. “The opposite to that is, how do we get vaccinated and understand that this kind of content happens and exists without being completely cynical? Law? How to do it without losing confidence in all the authentic media? It’s going to force us all to figure out how to maneuver in a world where seeing isn’t always believing.
But as the deepfake version of Whitaker put it in this report, “The possibilities are endless and a little bit scary.”
