70% of fully vaccinated prisoners caught COVID-19 in Texas Delta outbreak, CDC says

More than two-thirds of fully vaccinated prisoners caught COVID-19 during an outbreak in a Texas prison, but the vaccine protected against serious illness, a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed.

Of 185 fully vaccinated prisoners in the unnamed prison, 129 caught the virus, according to data compiled by the CDC and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This was a much lower rate than unvaccinated prisoners – 93% of 42 unvaccinated prisoners caught COVID-19 during the outbreak, according to the study published Tuesday in the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Four people had to be hospitalized and three of them were not vaccinated, the data showed. An unvaccinated person has died, the data shows.

The study adds to growing evidence that COVID-19 vaccines reduce the risk of hospitalization and serious illness. Prisons tend to have higher rates of COVID-19 and death due to cramping living conditions and underlying health issues among inmates, according to the CDC.

Another CDC study from September 10 showed that unvaccinated Americans were 11 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than those who were vaccinated. About 45% of people in the United States are unvaccinated, according to the CDC.

The latest CDC study showed that delta can spread in both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. The CDC said that “the infectious virus has been grown from vaccinated and unvaccinated people.”

Masks and regular testing are “critical” where physical distancing is “difficult,” even when vaccination rates are high, the CDC said.

Most of the prisoners were white males and had received Pfizer’s vaccine at least four months previously, the data showed.
