SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 729 on Wednesday, with seven more deaths and 18,236 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.
Five of the deaths occurred before February 10, but are still under investigation by state medical examiners, the health department said. The Department of Health estimates that there are now 15,720 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah.
The sliding average number of positive cases per day over seven days is now 590, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for this period of time reported with the “people over people” method is now 10.2%. The positive test rate per day averaged over seven days calculated with the “test-by-test” method is now 4.8%.
There are now 212 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 92 in intensive care, according to state data. About 72% of all intensive care unit beds in Utah are now occupied, including about 75% of intensive care beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals, according to the health department. About 53% of non-ICU hospital beds are now occupied in Utah.
A total of 759,533 vaccines have been administered in the state, up from 741,297 on Tuesday. Of those, 269,368 are second doses of the vaccine, according to state data.
The new figures indicate a 0.2% increase in positive cases since Tuesday. Of the 2,222,755 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.8% have tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests performed rose to 3,849,589 on Wednesday, up 21,267 from Tuesday. Of those, 8,249 were tests from people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19, the health department reported.
The seven deaths reported on Wednesday were:
- Box Elder County man aged 65 to 84 living in long-term care facility
- Salt Lake County man aged 45 to 64 living in long-term care facility
- A woman from Salt Lake County who was over 85 living in a long-term care facility
- Salt Lake County woman who was between 45 and 64 and was hospitalized after her death
- Salt Lake County woman aged 65 to 84 who was not hospitalized when she died
- Salt Lake County man aged 65 to 84 who was not hospitalized when he died
- Washington County man aged 65 to 84 living in long-term care facility
A death of an Iron County man that was reported on Monday has been removed from the total count of COVID-19 deaths, health officials said. The UDOH did not disclose the reason the reported death was removed from the tally.
Wednesday’s totals give Utah 372,708 total confirmed cases, with 14,783 total hospitalizations and 1,955 total deaths from the disease. A total of 355,033 cases of COVID-19 in Utah are now expected to be recovered, according to the Department of Health.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox is expected to deliver his weekly pandemic report at 11 a.m. Thursday, according to his office.
