Retail pharmacies at eight selected Hen House, Price Chopper and Walmart locations in Johnson County will begin offering a limited number of COVID-19 vaccines in the coming days as part of the federal retail pharmacy program.
The vaccine supply through this channel will be extremely limited and intended for residents 65 years of age and older who are eligible to be vaccinated in Phase 2 of the Kansas vaccine deployment plan.
For these reasons, county and state health officials always advise residents waiting to receive doses to be patient.
“It’s just a drop in the bucket of what we need,” said Lee Norman, MD, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Approximately 8,700 doses in total are expected to be shipped to Kansas for use in more than 30 counties under the federal retail pharmacy program. For context, Johnson County estimates that some 150,000 residents of the county are eligible for phase 2. (More than 30,000 have already been vaccinated.)
Overall, KDHE reports that nearly 234,000 Kansans – around 8% of the population – have been vaccinated so far.
It is not known exactly when the doses might be available at these retail pharmacies. The CDC says residents who are eligible for the vaccination should check pharmacy websites for more information.
County health officials have said those doses assigned through the federal retail pharmacy program are not distributed by the county health department.
Right now, in Johnson County, everyone 65 and over can be vaccinated, as well as some “critical high-contact workers” like teachers, first responders and grocery store workers.

- Chicken coop, 6900 W. 135th St., Overland Park
- Walmart, 13600 S. Alden St., Olathe
In addition, two nearby pharmacies in Wyandotte County are also on the state’s list:
- Chicken coop, 8120 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan.
- Chopper Prize, 5300 Speaker Road, Kansas City, Kan.
