ALPENA – A 911 caller who told police someone was shooting at him ended up behind bars after he allegedly attempted to rob a fruit stand, Michigan State Police reported.
Police met Justin Wesley Cummings, 33, and Alexandria Marvel-Elizabeth Hoffmann, 33, both of Flat Rock, on Thursday after Cummings reported two SUVs were following him and his girlfriend and shooting at them while that they were driving on US-23 South.
At around 2:30 p.m., soldiers from the MSP-Alpena Post arriving at US-23 and Pohl Road – where the couple’s vehicle was parked with a flat tire – found no bullet holes or evidence to support the story of Cummings. Police cited Cummings for driving with a suspended license, and the couple left on foot.
Less than three hours later, a business on Ripley Boulevard in Alpena Township reported a stolen vehicle. Police found the abandoned vehicle on M-32 near King Settlement Road on its way to respond to a separate report of an ongoing assault.
There, police again encountered Cummings and Hoffman – who allegedly stole the vehicle, abandoned it, then proceeded to a fruit stand on M-65, where police said they attempted to steal some money to fruit stand worker.
A policeman on leave from Rogers City witnessed a fight that ensued and intervened. Soldiers arrested Cummings and Hoffman, who were arraigned Tuesday in 88th District Court on charges of illegally driving a motor vehicle.
