MADISON, Wisconsin – Almost all of the more than 16,000 people employed by UW Health are on the health care provider’s COVID vaccine requirements, officials said Monday.
UW Health first announced that it was requiring all employees to receive the COVID vaccine as an extension of its existing influenza vaccine requirements in early August. The policy set an October 1 deadline for employees to receive the first dose of the vaccine and their second dose by November 1. At the time of the announcement, more than 90% of UW Health employees covered by the policy were already vaccinated. .

In an update on Monday, UW Health says 99.96% of the 16,185 people covered by the policy ended up complying with the requirement, meaning they received their first dose or a medical waiver. or religious has been approved. Officials say about 96% of employees have been vaccinated, while just under 4% have had their waivers approved. All physicians and providers in the UW Health System are also considered compliant, either by vaccination or by approved exemption.

UW Health says the small number of employees who have not yet been vaccinated and have not been waived have until Oct. 11 to either get vaccinated or face layoff. Officials say they expect fewer than 10 employees across the system to eventually be made redundant for failing to meet the requirement.
