ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WILX) – The first case of measles reported in Washtenaw County was not measles.
According to health officials who spoke to The Ann Arbor News and MLive, a child with measles symptoms was initially tested positive for the contagious disease. But additional tests showed that it was not measles.
A spokesman for the Washtenaw County Health Department said the child's symptoms had been caused by a reaction to a vaccine.
Health officials alerted the public on Monday, April 8, about what was initially thought to be a confirmed measles case.
They are again urging people to get vaccinated if they have not done so in the past. Measles is highly contagious and is transmitted by personal contact and by air.
The state considers that the vaccine is extremely effective and safe. A single dose protects about 95% of children. After two doses, almost 100% are immunized.
