WASHINGTON (WTHR) – The Centers for Disease Control is investigating an outbreak of Listeria in several states, along with cold cuts and cheeses.
The agency said Wednesday that eight cases of Listeria had been reported in four states, including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, with one reported death in Michigan. Evidence has shown that meat and cheese sliced at the deli counter may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which could make people sick.
Those who became ill said they had consumed meat and cheese in a number of stores, and samples taken from deli counters in several stores yielded positive results, the CDC said. However, no common supplier of deli products has been identified and the CDC does not advise consumers to avoid consuming products prepared on the shelf or that retailers stop selling sliced products.
The CDC recommends not to let meat and hot dog packaging fruit juices come into contact with other foods, utensils or food preparation surfaces to reduce the risk of Listeria. You can also wash your hands after handling deli meats and cheeses and keep the meat and cheese slices in the refrigerator for a maximum of 3 to 5 days.
According to the authorities, pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65 and people with compromised immune systems are the most likely to become ill because of listeriosis.
