Indiegogo crowdfunding site will ban anti-vaccine fundraising

The crowdfunding site Indiegogo bans anti-vaccine fundraising and other fundraising in the health sector that is not supported by science, the company said Friday, according to BuzzFeed News.

A spokesman for the company added that the ban had not yet been implemented and that it did not provide a timetable for its implementation, reported BuzzFeed News.

The decision comes amid a measles outbreak in the United States and after anti-vaccine users raised $ 86,543 for a documentary falsely claiming that vaccines cause autism, according to BuzzFeed News.

Indiegogo did not immediately return a request for comment on The Hill.

GoFundMe, another crowdfunding site, recently banned anti-vaccine fundraising on its website.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported last week that there are 695 cases of measles confirmed in the United States, the highest number since the cancellation of the declaration of elimination of the disease in 2000.

The increase in the number of measles cases was partly due to the spread of misinformation and misrepresentations about vaccines and led to public health emergency declarations in several cities of the country.
