GUTHRIE, OK (KOCO / CNN) – A 28-year-old Oklahoma man suffered a stroke while hitting his neck.

"As soon as I heard the pop, all my left side started to get numb," said Josh Hader. "I got up and tried to grab an ice pack in the fridge and I remember that I could not walk right."

His father-in-law took him to the emergency.

"I had about six or seven nurses and doctors around me," said Hader.

Dr. Vance McCollom, of Mercy Hospital, said that Hader's attack could have killed him.

McCollom shared a radiograph of his patient's neck, showing a tear in his spinal artery – a crucial vessel leading to the brain.

"If you have a cerebrovascular accident in this area, you may end up with a patient and they are stuck," said McCollom. "They understand what's going on, but they can not communicate, they can not move, they can not talk, they can not breathe."

Hader's stroke was not so severe, but it was causing a lot of damage. One of the muscles that go to his eye is weakened by an injured nerve, the doctor said.

Hader had to wear a strip for the eyes for several days. The doctors decided that his condition was better treated with medication and physical therapy.

"The first few days I could not walk without a walker," said Hader.

The walker is tidy, but he still has problems with his left leg. In addition, he had a strange side effect: the painful hiccup that lasted nearly two weeks.

Hader said the hiccups were so severe that they almost caused a panic attack. But the hard part is not being able to help his wife take care of her two young children.

"I can not get him out of the cradle, give him milk in the middle of the night, I can not do anything about it," he said.

McCollom said that Hader would probably still have the consequences of his stroke. The doctor said that if people wanted to break their necks, they should simply move their head from one side to the other.
