Great migration
Fifty years ago, astronaut Buzz Aldrin became the second human to walk on the moon. He is now calling on the United States to make the presence of people on Mars a national priority – and he's not just talking about some lucky astronauts.
"The eyes of the United States – and our unified commitment – should aim to open the door, of our time, to the great migration of humanity to Mars," wrote Aldrin in a recently published editorial for The Washington Post.

But these missions should not be the ultimate goal, wrote the astronaut, but rather serve to help us define a path to Mars.
"When it comes to orbital mechanics, Earth to Mars migration missions are complex," Aldrin wrote. "That said, human nature – and potentially the ultimate survival of our species – requires humanity to have a continuing reach in the outside."
"Call it curiosity or calculation, strategic planning or destiny," he said. "In simple terms: we explore or we exhale. That's why we have to continue with that. "
