Found background
Last month, SpaceIL in Israel almost became the first private company to land on the moon. Unfortunately, Beresheet – the lunar lander – suffered a last-minute engine failure and crashed.
Now, CNET reports that NASA managed to take a photo of the crash site using the camera's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbit (LAR) and began to study the impact, which could potentially help the space agency to find the missing equipment that Beresheet was carrying on the Moon.
Consequences
At 56 miles above the lunar surface, the LRO was too far to say how deep a crater remained Beresheet, according to CNET. But it was revealed that the Israeli space shuttle had a 33-foot-long impact on the moon's surface during its crash.
"From so far, LROC was unable to detect if Beresheet had formed a surface crater during impact. It is possible that the crater is too small to appear in the photos, "reads a NASA press release.
According to the statement, it is possible that Beresheet has simply left a small cut on the surface of the moon instead of digging a crater, but NASA will not really know before looking closer.
