Mets 4, Tigers 3 – The Tigers can not win late, but give up the final of the series

The Tigers entered Sunday's game in New York, seeking to win their first road series as, coincidentally, they were last in New York and won two of the Yankees' three games in early April. Despite a quick lead and two valiant twists at the end of the inning, they failed to win as they lost the final by a score of 4-3. Spencer Turnbull, who had not scored a goal in six innings in his last three starts, had a good start, seven innings and eight, but conceded four earned runs and seven hits.

Nicholas Castellanos led the Tigers offensive early in the game. He made a solo homer in the opposite field to the first run. In the third inning, with two face-offs and two outs, he delivered a single with two runs to push the Tigers to 3-0. Spencer Turnbull beat the first three innings with just two hits and five strikeouts. Things got complicated in the fourth inning, though, as the Mets exploded for four points, including three on an unlikely home run by Adeiny Hechavarria, to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.

Zach Wheeler would then slam the Tigers' door, removing the next 12 batters by order and pulling hard in the eighth inning when the Tigers would eventually get runners and end Wheeler's day. Jeurys Familia was going to attack Lugo and Castellanos to eliminate the threat, a very familiar result for Tigers fans. Daniel Stumpf and Zach Reininger would create a scoreless bottom of the eighth to keep the Mets to one goal as the game went to the ninth and the Mets brought in their closest, Edwin Diaz.

Christin Stewart scored a goal to start the inning and was carried by runner-cleaver Josh Harrison, who took second place to position himself in goal. With a single withdrawal, Brandon Dixon hit a single across the infield, but Harrison did not read the ball to the right and stayed too long second, which did not allow him to score. John Hicks beat Diaz to a baton of nine before hitting. It all came down to JaCoby Jones, who fought valiantly for 11 shots before counting for a complete goal for the third shot that was not a shot but close enough for referee Jerry Meals.
