With 1,500 cases confirmed throughout the state, the hepatitis A outbreak in Indiana has reached the Wabash Valley

SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTHI) – Over the weekend, health officials investigated a case of hepatitis A at McDonalds in Sullivan.

Even though they now say that the risk of getting it is low, many people are worried.

Hepatitis is an epidemic in the state of Indiana.

According to the state health department, 1,500 cases have been confirmed. Normally, we would see about 20 a year.

This figure scares Susan Crump. She lives in Vincennes but often visits Sullivan.

"It is clear that you are wondering where you are going and what people are doing where you are going, especially if you have kids," Crump said.

Crump said that she has a 15-year-old son who loves to eat McDonald's. And she will do everything to keep her and her son safe.

The case of McDonald's is the most recent case in the Wabash Valley. The Indiana State Department of Health said it had been investigating hepatitis A outbreaks for a few years now. The Illinois Department of Health said he had some too.

"Instead of improving, it just gets worse," Crump said.

She said that when she had the alert in her phone, her first instinct was to check her local McDonalds.

When she had the second warning that they had cleaned up the place, she was still skeptical.

"To what extent have they cleaned up everything, how can they prove to the community that everything is gone and that no one else will fall ill," she said.

Sullivan's health department was contacted several times on Monday.

They refused to go to the camera or answer questions.
