Humans may never discover the slightest trace of extraterrestrial life because we will accidentally destroy it.
This is the daring theory of a reputed physicist who thinks we could eliminate aliens without even realizing it.

Scientists think that extraterrestrial life probably exists, but we have never seen proof: a puzzle known as Fermi Paradox.
And the answer may be that humans are going (and may have already) destroyed the evidence of extraterrestrial life.
That's what the theoretical physicist Alexander Berezin, from the Russian group MIET, says, who details a new theory in an article published on Arxiv.
He thinks that when it is a question of traveling between the stars, we are in a "first in, last out" situation.

Berezin thinks that many types of "life" could have access to high-speed travel in space.
However, he argues that the type of civilization does not matter – only the level of technology achieved.
"The specific nature of civilizations appearing at the interstellar level should not be important," he writes.
"They could [be] biological organisms like us, dishonest AIs who have rebelled against their creators or minds distributed around the planet, like those described by Stanislaw Lem in Solaris. "
According to Berezin, the first life that will reach the capacity to travel interstellar could "necessarily eliminate all competition in order to fuel its own expansion".
He says that this does not mean that an extraterrestrial race would intentionally destroy other forms of life.
Instead, it could happen by accident.
"They simply will not notice, in the same way that a construction team is demolishing an anthill for building real estate because they are not incentivized to protect it," he writes.

If you panic of being crushed like an ant by an incredibly powerful alien race, do not do it.
Berezin believes that we are the construction team (not the ant) in this scenario.
The physicist argues that this annihilation of extraterrestrial life could happen simply because humans – and our technologies – are becoming too powerful.
"A single dishonest AI can potentially populate the entire supercluster with copies of itself, turning every solar system into a supercomputer," he wrote.
"And it's useless to ask why he would do that, all that matters is that he can."
He added that this terrifying future means that since we are the first to travel in the interstellar, we "will most likely be the last to leave".
