NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The country is currently experiencing an epidemic of hepatitis A.
Now, a former North Charleston Zaxby employee has been diagnosed with hepatitis A.
With a press release, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Protection sent this tweet:
Guests having eaten at Zaxby's (4845 Tanger Outlet Blvd) in North Charleston may have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus if they had dined between May 20 and 23. Press release: https://t.co/FSwXxTAhQ8

Here in South Carolina, it started as a spike in reported hepatitis A cases in Aiken County. It then spread to other parts of the state, prompting public health officials to declare a statewide outbreak.
This statement was sent to News 2 on behalf of Tangier and Zaxby in response to the release of DHEC. "Tangier, LLC dba Zaxby's is committed to the health and safety of all guests and maintains high standards of food safety, including requiring all food handlers to wear gloves. With such security measures in place, the risk of transmission is extremely low: no case of transmission of hepatitis A by catering services in South Carolina has been reported in the food sector. LLC dba Zaxby's is taking this situation very seriously and working closely with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC)., LLC has imposed vaccinations on all Employees of this site to allow them to continue working in the restaurant.This restaurant, which received a grade of 92 during its most recent medical inspection, has been completely sanitized as a precaution.We will continue to monitor all the recommendations of the South Carolina DHEC regarding this situation.
