Experts say that laundry detergent pods continue to poison children and adults – CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Current safety standards are not enough to protect children from injuries caused by these popular detergent pods. Pre-dosed packages are convenient and popular, but the detergent is toxic.

The new research indicates that they continue to poison children and injure some adults, and that there is still much to be done to prevent poisoning.

They are bright and colorful and may look like sweets for young children, but the detergent pods contain dangerous chemicals. US poison control centers received nearly 73,000 calls in five years for liquid laundry detergent bags.

Despite the adoption of a new product safety standard adopted in 2015, the pediatric study shows only an 18% decrease in exposures in children under 6 years of age.

Eight deaths have been associated with the ingestion of packs – two in children less than one year old and six in adults with a history of dementia.

"If you have young children or seniors at risk, you should not have them at home. There are equally good alternatives for your laundry, powders and liquid detergents, "said Henry Spiller, director of the Central Ohio poison control center.

The study also indicates that eye injuries caused by popular products are increasing among adults, with 700 people being found in emergencies last year.

"They appear and throw themselves on your face. And if you have it in your eyes, it can be a serious injury, "Spiller said.

Poison center experts say more needs to be done to prevent accidental exposures and reduce the toxicity of these exposures.

"We would like them to individually pack the laundry detergent sachets. For now, it's voluntary and they do not, "said Spiller.

Researchers say that liquid laundry detergent pouches are more toxic than traditional liquids and powders.

Doctors say that chemicals in pods are highly concentrated, which makes them dangerous. They caused severe burns to the mouth and respiratory tract, in addition to cognitive problems.

About 6% of the study exposures had serious medical consequences.
