The father of a Texan woman who died with her husband in Fiji on Monday said he wanted an independent US investigation into the mysterious disease that killed them.
Mark Calanag, Michelle's father and David Paul, told ABC News that he was in contact with the US Embassy in Fiji and is waiting for the results of their autopsies.
"I told them to do not cremate until I'm satisfied," Calanag told the network. "I would like the whole world to know if they died of infectious diseases."
The couple – from Fort Worth, Texas – were in good health when they arrived on vacation but became ill the day before their scheduled departure. They died later.
Calanag said he wanted the CDC to confirm their deaths and "warn Americans and others that these are the problems you will face if you have to travel to Fiji. To be aware."
A US State Department official confirmed the deaths of Michelle and David Paul in Fiji at KVUE and said they were monitoring the investigation.
