GOLDEN, Colorado – According to officials, rattlesnakes attacked two dogs on Jefferson County's trails last weekend in the Matthews / Winters Park area and North Table Mountain Park.

Now, Jeffco Open Space officials want people to know that the cold weather will bring more snakes out into the open air, as was the case on Tuesday, when April Couviliion and her two children saw a rattlesnake in Matthews / Winters Park.

"I was scared on the way with the kids because they were interested in it." Everett was trying to go ahead and see him and I was telling myself eeehhh, let's stay back a bit and I did not know the procedure, because how do you get around a rattlesnake with children, "she said.

Couvillion thinks it's a good time teaching for his children and hopes others will also notice it.

"I think it's just being vigilant and teaching them the noise and not going to investigate. If anyone tells you that there is a rattlesnake, you know, go slow, be careful." Vigilant was our word of the day, "Couvillion added.

The best advice you can do if you see a snake on the trail is to stay out of the way and not do anything that can shake it, like throwing stones or biting it. They also want to remind people to keep their dogs on a leash. If they come off and sniff, your pet may bite nose or muzzle.
