Well, on Friday, June 7, 2019, President Trump said the moon was part of Mars. That's right, the red planet is about 33.9 million kilometers from Earth.
Trump's statement was made in a very bewildering tweet for wasting money on another lunar mission (although he promised them this funding and supported the exploration in a statement in 2017, but we'll come back to that later) later).
"They should focus on the much bigger things we do," Trump told NASA scientists and researchers. "Including Mars (which the Moon is part of), Defense and Science!"
There was a lot to unwrap and, of course, the Internet was asking questions, reflections, critical shots and explanations.
People wanted to read more and were eager to further explore the issue.
A very important distinction:

Some were completely stunned.
Many commemorated the historical character of Trump's claim.
Still, people wanted to know what the president's tweet meant, because it seemed to reverse his own directive regarding future space exploration projects in the country. Just weeks after Vice President Mike Pence great speech about Americans returning to … the moon.
In December 2017, Trump signed the Space Policy Directive 1, which required NASA to create a significant and sustainable presence on and around the moon, and then use that knowledge to bring a crew to Mars. What the President most likely tried to express, said Logsdon, is that he wanted to get around the moon and go directly to Mars, which is "technically impossible."

"I understand that some people think we should first try to get back to the surface of the moon, as predicted before," Obama told the crowd at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. So, noted Logsdon, Trump basically "joined Obama to say we should jump the moon and go to Mars".
"I'm sure he does not know it," added Logsdon, a former member of NASA's advisory board.
