American Airlines has just increased its one-way fares on domestic flights by $ 5. The airline confirmed the rate increase in an email to CNN Business.
Jamie Baker, an analyst at JPMorgan, noted in a research note that it had appeared that Hawaiian Airlines had followed the example of American by raising fares throughout the system.
Baker also noted that Southwest had increased fares on several flights, especially for business travelers.
Southwest matched the US rate increase in some markets, but the airline told CNN Business Thursday that it had not done it "in all areas, in any market".
Hawaiian was not immediately available to comment on the reported rate increases.
The news of the rate hike seems to have surprised investors, mainly because it is less than a month since the last industry – wide price hike.
"We were not expecting another increase so soon," Baker wrote in his report. He added that, as fuel costs have recently declined, "we were much less obsessed with domestic rates than usual, given what we saw as a low probability of further increases".
