LAKE BOTTOM COUNTY, WIS. (WBAY) – According to the health department of Fond du Lac County, a child tested positive for mumps. Health worker Kim Mueller confirmed on TV WBAY that the child was attending the Jesus Little Lambs daycare in Fond du Lac.

On July 3, the health department sent a letter to parents of children who did not receive the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella). These children can not return to daycare until they have received the vaccine or until the end of the incubation period. This period is from July 10 to July 23.

The health department points out that the MMR vaccine is the best protection against mumps. The first dose is recommended for children 12 to 15 months, according to the Department of Health. A second dose is available at 4 years.

The Ministry of Health says the MMR vaccine is free for eligible children.

Mumps is spread by the saliva or mucus of an infected person. It can be transmitted by coughing, sneezing or talking.

The symptoms are fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite. The patient will have swelling along the cheek and jaw.
