The president also said that the United States would put another human on the moon "very soon". Trump commented: "We will soon return to the moon and one day we will plant the American flag on Mars."
Last year, Trump announced the creation of the US Space Force, a new brand of the army that will be overseen by the Air Force.
Trump also used his Independence Day speech to praise the history and uniqueness of the American nation.
He said, "As we gather together tonight, in the joy of freedom, we remember that everyone shares a truly extraordinary heritage.
"Together we are part of one of the greatest stories ever told, the history of America."

The declaration of independence of the United States was ratified on July 4, 1776, while the former colony declared the independence of Great Britain.
After several years of war in which the Americans were supported by French and Spanish forces, Britain was forced to recognize American sovereignty.
During a visit to Japan in May, Trump pledged to strengthen space cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, he said: "Japan will join our mission of sending American astronauts into space.

"We will go to the moon, we will go to Mars very, very soon.
"It's very exciting. From a military point of view, nothing is more important than space."
The first American astronauts landed on the moon in 1969, but there have been no visits since 1972.
In recent years, the United States has been facing increasing competition in space exploration by China.
Earlier this year, China became the first country to land a spacecraft on the other side of the moon.
