(WSIL) – A treatment for dogs could make their owners ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
CDC researchers are investigating the cases of 45 people infected with salmonella.
The disease was diagnosed in 45 people in 13 states, including 3 in Illinois and 3 in Missouri. 12 people were hospitalized but no one died.
According to officials, 34 people diagnosed with salmonella have had contact with a dog before becoming ill. Of this group, 17 had contact with dog treats or dogs treated with treats.
No common supplier has been identified.
The CDC has some safety tips to help you stay healthy while feeding your pet:
- Always wash your hands with soap and water immediately after handling pet food or treats. This is the most important step to prevent diseases.
- Whenever possible, store pet food and treats away from areas where human food is stored or prepared and out of reach of young children.
- Do not use your pet's bowl to pick up food. Use a clean, dedicated spoon, spoon or cup.
- Always follow storage instructions on bags or containers for pet food.
