Scientists have discovered a "super-deep" diamond mine hundreds of kilometers below the surface of the Earth.
The diamonds have been found in the Juina region of Brazil and have probably come from a depth of 255 miles to 410 miles, according to an international team of researchers. A volcanic eruption has brought the rocks to the surface, reports The Independent.

"We analyzed, for the first time, the helium isotopes contained in microscopic bubbles inside the super-deep diamonds," said Suzette Timmerman, director of research at the Australian National University, in a statement.

The researchers say that isotopes support the idea of a "primordial" reservoir of molten rock that has existed since the formation of the Earth or very soon after.
