The CDC is studying the connection between vaping, a mysterious disease; cases reported in 15 states

The Centers for Disease Control are investigating more than 100 cases of a mysterious lung disease related to the use of electronic cigarettes.

CDC works with health departments in Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Indiana, and Minnesota to learn more about disease clusters – primarily teenagers and young adults – related to vaping . Of the cases, 30 occurred in Wisconsin.

According to CNN, at least 125 cases of the disease have been reported in 15 states. Alabama was not among the states that reported cases.

All cases are similar and "seem to be related to the use of electronic cigarette products," said the CDC. There is no conclusive proof that an infectious disease is the cause of the diseases. Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue, some people developing severe breathing difficulties requiring ventilation. Other people reported chest pain, fever, weight loss, nausea and diarrhea.

In an advisory to health systems, the CDC advises clinicians to ask patients with respiratory or pulmonary diseases if they use electronic cigarettes or other types of vaping products.

These diseases are linked to growing concerns about the use of electronic cigarettes, particularly among adolescents. The nicotine present in most vaping products can adversely affect adolescent brain development, the CDC said, impacting areas that control attention, learning, mood control, and pulses. The use of nicotine in adolescence can also increase the risk of future addiction, the CDC said.
