Florence, Mont. • A man from Utah said that he had eaten berries and insects to survive for nearly a week while he was lost in the wild along the border between Idaho and Montana.
Kaden Laga, 25 years old, is about to become a father and he said that he had to survive and find his pregnant wife at home, whatever that may be, a- he told KUTV Station in Salt Lake City during an interview Sunday.
The Orem man was out riding in the Bitterroot-Selway desert on August 11 when one of the group's horses became lame. He stated that he had volunteered to join the trail and get help, but that he took a wrong turn and lost himself without a cell phone.
He was only carrying a bottle of water and a Ziploc bag, reported KECI-TV in Montana.
"I ate a lot of grasshoppers, I ate only one, that's my dessert," he said.
Meanwhile, the search teams roamed the forest as planes flew overhead. Laga saw a helicopter at least twice, but the researchers could not see it through the thick trees, he said.
"They come in and I say to myself, 'That's it, they'll pick me up,' whoosh and they're just going in the opposite direction," he said, KUTV reported.
Finally, Laga discovered a trail and entered a search camp on Friday.
His wife Arden Laga said that she had collapsed when she heard the news.
"I just fell on my knees and I'm just on all fours. He did it. He is alive. He is in agreement. We are fine. It's finally over, "she told KECI-TV.
