Chandrayaan 2: The image shows two important sites of the Moon, the Apollo crater and the basin of the Eastern Mare

New Delhi:

The first image of the moon captured by Chandrayaan 2, the ambitious Indian lunar mission in Rs 1,000 crores, was tweeted by the ISRO space agency today. According to ISRO, the moon's image was captured at an altitude of about 2,650 km from the surface of the moon and was taken yesterday.

The image shows two important landmarks on the moon, the Apollo crater and the basin of the Mare Orientale.

The Apollo, a 538 km wide crater named after NASA's Apollo Lunar Missions, is located in the southern hemisphere of the moon. According to NASA, many small craters located inside Apollo carry the names of astronauts and NASA officials who died. Seven of these craters take their name after the crew of NASA in Colombia.

La Mare Orientale, meanwhile, would have more than 3 billion years and a width of about 950 km. In the form of a bubble, it is formed after the impact of an asteroid shaped object. A very important landmark on the moon, Mare Orientale is hard to look at from the ground, according to NASA.

Yesterday, the Chandrayaan 2 successfully performed a critical maneuver that brought it closer to the surface of the moon. The spacecraft had entered the moon's orbit Tuesday morning after performing one of the most delicate maneuvers of its historic mission.
