More than 1 in 16 women consider that their first sexual experience is rape, according to a study published Monday.
In a survey of 13,310 US women aged 18 to 44, about 6.5% reported that their first sexual encounter was a rape. The average age of these respondents at the time of their assault was about 15 years, while the average age of their attackers was 27, according to the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
It was found that first-time rape victims were more likely to have various health problems, including unwanted pregnancies and abortions.
"It's pretty alarming, and it's only the tip of the iceberg because this study only includes women aged 18 to 44," NPR told Laura Hawks. , the lead author of the study and researcher at Cambridge Health Alliance.
The researchers analyzed a set of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that asked for details of respondents' first sexual intercourse for the study.
They noted that the data had been collected before the "Me too" movement, so more women would be willing to come forward now, reported NPR.
