MARGATE, Fla. – Faced with the growing situation regarding listeriosis problems at two sites in South Florida, the Penn Dutch Food Center is shutting down these stores.
Loyal customers received an e-mail from Penn Dutch on Tuesday saying that the Hollywood site would not reopen and that the Margate site would soon be closed for good too.
Penn Dutch also stated that no decision had been taken regarding Sunrise's location.
According to Sun Sentinel, the Margate store will open on Wednesday for a retirement sale.
All of this comes after Local 10 obtained a food safety inspection report, which found that "environmental" samples had been tested positive at Lister at the Penn Dutch Food Center in Margate.
The store is located at 3201 North State Road 7.
The report was released Monday by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
The 110 samples were taken from the store on Sept. 9 after food and environmental positive Listeria samples were discovered last month at the Penn Dutch Food Center in Hollywood.
The Hollywood site has not been open since.
Originally, Penn Dutch posted deceptive signs outside this location, indicating that it had been closed for roof repairs.
Back at the Margate site, a stop usage order was issued for several areas and equipment.
All trolleys with wheels, black plastic trays, a cutting board for seafood, the balance for pallets in the tray washing area, the dust collector, the delicatessen shop, the deli cutting room, the dining room cutouts, seafood shelf, fish cooler, seafood and deli aisle, cold room, chicken production room and future room can not be used until new order .
This is not the first time that Margate's location has listeriosis problems.
As Local 10 News reported in March, an order to stop the sale of hundreds of pounds of meat was issued because of positive listeria samples.
The management of Penn Dutch attributes the problems of Hollywood to a bad roof.
There was no comment on the current problems in Margate. However, the company has indicated on its website that the Margate store is closed on Tuesdays but will be reopened at 8 am on Wednesday, during regular office hours.
Listeria infection is a bacterial foodborne illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
It is most often contracted by eating poorly prepared meats and unpasteurized milk products.
Listeria like humid environments.
