Mosquito Found in Joint Base Tests Positive for a Dangerous Disease

Military officials at the New Jersey Common Base, McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, advise the public to take precautionary measures after a mosquito discovered at the facility's site has been tested positive for a dangerous disease.

Laboratory findings have revealed the presence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a very rare but serious disease transmitted by a mosquito that can cause brain inflammation, said spokeswoman for Airman 1st Class Joint Base. Briana Cespedes.

"A single mosquito has been found infected with EEE, and transmission to humans is rare, but the direction of JB MDL is taking all appropriate steps to alleviate the problem," said Cespedes.

An information sheet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that severe cases of EEE begin with the sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills and vomiting, which can subsequently degenerate into disorientation, convulsions and in a coma.

According to the CDC, about one-third of patients who develop EEE die, and many of those who survive suffer from mild to severe brain damage.

More than 20 EEE cases have been reported in 2019, with records recorded in Massachusetts and Michigan being the most numerous. Other affected states include Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina and Rhode Island.

The CDC urges the public to avoid mosquito bites because there is no vaccine or preventative medicine:

• Use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridine, IR3535 or lemon eucalyptus oil on exposed skin and / or clothing. The permethrin repellent / insecticide can be used on clothes to protect it in several washes. Always follow the instructions on the package.
• Wear long sleeves and pants when the weather permits.
• Install secure and undamaged screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes.
• Eliminate mosquito breeding sites by emptying stagnant water from flower pots, buckets, drums and other containers. Drill holes in the tires to let the water run out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their side when not in use.
