We can thank Russia, really a volanco that broke out there, for the fantastic purple sunsets recently seen in the Houston area, says the National Weather Service.
The purple haze has crossed the skies in the United States and around the world since the Raikoke volcano nearly a kilometer wide erupted on June 22. The event was so big that astronauts from the International Space Station could see it.
"What happens when a powerful volcano starts, is that it releases chemicals and other particles into the atmosphere," said Jimmy Fowler. , a meteorologist at the Galveston National Weather Service.
Particles pushing people to see purple light rays are sulfur dioxide, Fowler said.
The gas is not harmful, said the meteorologist.
"It looks pretty," he added.
