According to the Health Division of Oakland County, a 70-year-old man would have contracted the virus transmitted by mosquitoes.

This is the fourth case of West Nile virus in the state this year.

People with the virus usually have no symptoms or have mild illness, such as fever, headache and body aches.

Tips to protect yourself from mosquito bites:

Use an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) approved insect repellent. All insects registered with the EPA
repellents are evaluated for their safety and efficacy and will contain as active ingredient DEET, picaridine, IR3535, lemon oil, eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol. Repellents containing a higher percentage of the active ingredient usually provide more durable protection. Always follow the instructions on the product label.
o Be careful when using insect repellent on children's hands as it may irritate eyes and mouth.
• Wear protective clothing such as shirts and long-sleeved pants.
• Limit outdoor activities from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
• Keep mosquito nets on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering buildings. Do not keep the doors open.
• Empty mosquito breeding sites around the house, such as buckets, unused ponds, used tires or similar sites where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
• Use mosquito nets and / or fans on outdoor eating areas.
