Study Linking Pizza to Healthy Eating Wins Ironic Award for Italian Scientist

Most of us would prefer to live in a world where pizza consumption is an indicator of a healthy and balanced diet. And thanks to Silvano Gallus, we could do it.

Well, sort of.

Silvano Gallus, an epidemiologist in Milan, recently received an Ig Nobel Prize for his work "to gather evidence that pizza can prevent illness and death if pizza is made and consumed in Italy".

It's no surprise that the Ig Nobel – awarded by Annals of Improbable Research – is not up to the Nobel Prize. This tongue-in-cheek honor aims to "celebrate the unusual, honor the imagination – and arouse people's interest in science, medicine and technology" , according to the publication.

Nevertheless, the ceremony held earlier this month at Harvard University's Sanders Theater drew 1,100 spectators, many of whom applauded when Gallus took the stage to accept his award.

"What did we find in our research? We found that by analyzing data from a combination of large Italian epidemiological studies, we found that people who regularly ate pizza had a reduced risk of cancer digestion and infarction myocardium, "Gallus said in his speech.

He also said that the pizza he talks about – made and consumed in Italy – is not wholesome in itself. As his studies published between 2003 and 2006 also point out, he and his team suggested that eating Mediterranean ingredients from an Italian pizza meant a healthier Mediterranean diet, combined with a healthier lifestyle.

"Our interpretation is that pizza can represent a general indication, a marker of the Italian diet, that like other Mediterranean diets [have], had major health benefits, "said Gallus.

"In conclusion, we recommend eating an Italian pizza, but please, keep the pepperoni for health reasons," he added.

It is also probably safe to assume that eating oversized stuffed Cheez-It pizzas is probably just as dangerous.
