MADISON (WKOW) – Look up into the dark sky Wednesday night for a chance to see a bright meteor, part of the Taurid meteor shower.
Taurids have the longest duration of overall visibility.
Meteors from this particular current begin to appear in our night sky around October 21 and will continue until November 27 or around November 27. Thursday 12 Nov
By then, the moon will likely be a thin, waning crescent and shouldn’t rise until 3:15 a.m., leaving around 9 hours of dark, moonless skies. Which is best for those trying to spot the Taurids.
Anywhere from 10 to 15 meteors are likely per hour. They often seem to move quite slowly.
To get the best possible photo to see a meteor, head to an area with dark skies. Light pollution affects the chances of seeing the shower, so it is best to leave the city lights on. Look up to the big sky, in any direction, and you can just see the Taurids with the naked eye.
