The CDC is refining its message on wearing a mask.
“I’m glad the CDC has finally approved what we already knew,” said Dr. Jeffrey Jahre, an infectious disease expert at St. Luke’s University Health Network.
For months we are told that wearing a mask will only serve to protect others, but Jahre says it does so much more than that.
“We also said that if you wear a mask that has a tight weave, it will almost certainly give you some protection and protect others,” Jahre said.
Cases of COVID are at an all time high and we know droplets in the air are the main cause of the spread. Knowing that wearing a mask can give you some protection, even if others do not, gives you some peace of mind.
Dr Jahre says the type of mask you wear is important.
“What we tell people is that if you wear a mask it has to have at least two to three layers. If it’s a fabric mask with a single layer it has to be a tight weave like silk or if you use polypropylene it’s even better, ”Jahre said.
Dr Jahre says these types of masks are readily available and you can even make some yourself, so if you go out, mask yourself. You don’t just protect others, you help protect yourself.
