The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 2,152 new cases of COVID-19 and 22 new deaths on Wednesday. The latest report comes as California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday warned that a number of California counties would revert to more restrictive levels in his color-coded plan plan.
With 903 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19, Los Angeles County will remain in the most restrictive “purple” level of Newsom’s plan. Earlier in the week, Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer noted that LA County could move to the less restrictive Level 2 in four weeks at the earliest.
Public health officials said today that an increase in large public gatherings with minimal social distancing could be the cause of the COVID-19 outbreak. They are also concerned that, as the holidays approach, large family gatherings may increase the risk of transmission.
In addition to avoiding large gatherings with people who do not live in their own households, officials continue to urge Angelenos to wear headgear properly and maintain good social distancing when possible. Even wearing a simple sheet mask can significantly protect residents from transmission of COVID-19, a UCLA study found. The study, published Wednesday, found that fabric masks can reduce the spread of respiratory droplets by up to 77%. Face masks in combination with face shields can reduce the spread of particles by 89%.
Los Angeles County reported more than 2,000 new cases in the past seven days on Wednesday, a rate Ferrer called “alarming” on Monday. The county has now recorded a total of 327,964 cases and 7,216 deaths.
