This Pilates posture workout helps you stand taller

Pilates is one of the best ways to strengthen your body. One class can leave you with a deep muscle burn like no other. But at the same time as you increase your strength, you are also doing wonders for your posture – you may not have realized this until now.

In the last episode of Good moves, Chloe De Winter from Go Chlo Pilates shows you some of her favorite Pilates moves to improve your posture. “We all want to have better posture to stand taller and feel stronger around our upper back and our spines,” she says. There is a wide range of exercises and stretches that will get you there during the 10-minute session, starting with a few shrugs. “We’re working a muscle called serratus anterior, which wraps under the shoulder blades and helps support our shoulder blades against our upper back,” she says.

Then there are the arms and legs for a work of balance and stability. “It’s so good for our posture because it works all those stabilizing muscles around the body,” says De Winter. In addition to all the posture improvement exercises, you will be in for a treat: there are also wellness stretches to hopefully open and relax your body, improve mobility and allow for better posture.

Some exercises, like lifting the arms to the stomach, for example, may not feel like you are doing a lot at the moment, but these are often the ones that can have the greatest impact. “We work directly on these postural muscles that help us sit or stand with better posture throughout the day. Big muscles have to work hard, we have to develop and strengthen them, ”says De Winter.

By the time you finish this 10 minute workout, your body will feel amazing – stronger and more relaxed. And when you walk around standing just a little taller, you’ll know exactly why. Press play on the video above to try Pilates for a posture workout for yourself.
