A radio telescope in the jungles of Puerto Rico that has played a pivotal role in space research for more than 50 years and featured in a James Bond film is in danger of collapsing.
Engineers are studying how to save the Arecibo observatory after the failure of two support cables.
Michael Nolan, a former facility manager, said National Geographic that the odds that the observatory could be repaired were “probably 50-50”. It is the second largest telescope of its kind in the world and it is still used by scientists.
The two failed cables were supporting a 900 ton equipment platform suspended 150 m above the antenna. One of them tore a gash in the dish as he fell to the ground. The fear is that if a
