Patrick quinn – who co-created the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – died.
Quinn died on Sunday after a 7-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – according to his official Facebook page.
A commemorative message read: “It is with great sadness that we must share the passing of Patrick early this morning. He has been a blessing to all of us in many ways. We will always remember him for his inspiration and courage in his tireless fight against ALS. “
The Pat’s involvement with the IPC is related to her boyfriend, Peter Frates, who was widely seen as the face / inspiration behind the challenge and why it went viral. If it hadn’t been for PQ to catch wind of a similar challenge that occurred earlier in 2014 and tie it directly to ALS while spreading the word … Frates might not have never exploded.
Together, the two officially associated the challenge with ALS – which took off around the world and continued to raise awareness of the disease … not to mention the money. Recently, the Ice Bucket Challenge raised over $ 250 million to help study and hopefully eradicate the disease.
As we reported, Frates – who also had ALS – died quite young as well as at the age of 34 last year. Her Fenway Park video was the spark plug that got everyone up for the challenge in August 2014 – which also made people challenge other people.
Celebrities have also risen to the challenge over the years – people like David Spade, Charlie sheen, Kim k, Ellen and others. Then president Barack obama rejected the challenge … but chose to donate instead, which is probably worth more anyway.
As for Quinn, he was only 37 years old.
