Facebook says it will start removing ‘misinformation’ from COVID-19 vaccine

Facebook announced Thursday that it will start removing what it sees as “misinformation” about COVID-19 vaccines, as vaccinations appear to be due to start in a few weeks.

The social media giant said in a blog post that it would remove articles containing what it considers to be false claims about the “safety, efficacy, ingredients or side effects” of any of the many COVID-19 vaccines.

“Given the recent news that COVID-19 vaccines will soon be rolled out worldwide, in the coming weeks we will begin to remove false claims about these vaccines which have been debunked by public health experts on Facebook and Instagram . This is another way we apply our policy to remove misinformation about the virus that could lead to imminent physical damage. This could include false claims about the safety, efficacy, ingredients or side effects of vaccines, ”the post said.

“For example, we will remove false claims that COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips or anything else that is not on the official vaccine ingredient list.”

“We will also remove the COVID-19 vaccine conspiracy theories that we now know to be false: as specific populations are used without their consent to test vaccine safety. We will not be able to start enforcing these policies overnight. As it is early and the facts about COVID-19 vaccines will continue to evolve, we will regularly update the claims that we remove based on advice from public health authorities as they learn more, ”says the message.

Facebook has already eliminated what it considers disinformation about COVID-19 and, in October, banned ads that discourage the use of vaccines in general.

Biotech company Moderna announced on Monday that it would ask the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve its investigational COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

Moderna is the second pharmaceutical company to apply for an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a COVID-19 vaccine after Pfizer filed its application earlier this month. Moderna said new data showed the vaccine was 94.1% effective in its late stage clinical trial, just below Pfizer’s 95% effectiveness rate. The Moderna vaccine was developed in conjunction with the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed.

“We believe our vaccine will provide a powerful new tool that could change the course of this pandemic and help prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and death,” Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a statement. Bancel said last week that 20 million doses would be available by the end of the year.

The FDA’s vaccine advisory committee is due to meet on Dec. 17 to review data from both companies.

Meanwhile, a third vaccine is also in the works. AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said last Monday that their co-created COVID-19 vaccine has been shown to be up to 90% effective and manufacturers say it will be easier to distribute.

“These results show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives,” said Andrew Pollard, professor at the University of Oxford, who was the principal investigator of the drug trials. “Because the vaccine can be stored at refrigerator temperature, it can be distributed around the world using the normal immunization distribution system. And so our goal … to make sure we have a vaccine available everywhere, I think we’ve been successful in doing that.
