Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Republican Representative Dan Crenshaw in a fiery tweet on Saturday after she was caught on tape mocking her old restaurant job.
Crenshaw, a Texas congressman and former Navy SEAL, was recorded mocking the New York lawmaker’s waitress background, stating that she “believes life’s greatest difficulty” was deciding between serving as a still or sparkling water.
“These people are crazy. It’s not just Chuck Schumer. Chuck Schumer is controlled by people like AOC, who believe that the biggest difficulty in life was figuring out if it was still or sparkling, and you don’t. don’t know the hardships until you cry. in the back, ”Crenshaw said.
He then added sarcastically, “I’m so glad I didn’t have to do this in my old career. It was our biggest problem in the mountains of Afghanistan was, do we still offer them or bubbly? And what if they don’t like it? Rough over there, man. “
In response, Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th District in the House, hit back at Crenshaw on Twitter, writing: “The GOP acts like it cares, but behind closed doors that’s what they really say of the working class. “
“It’s good to know how much you really think about food workers, @DanCrenshawTX. I wonder: have you had a catering service while linking up with wealthy donors for your disdain for the poor? ” she tweeted.
Ocasio-Cortez has been a strong advocate for her working-class community since her election to Congress in 2018. Before becoming a lawmaker, she worked in restaurants and bars around the city.
As a progressive and outspoken Democrat in Congress, Ocasio-Cortez is frequently criticized by GOP officials who seek to disparage his past positions.
In 2019, Piers Morgan despised Ocasio-Cortez for being a former bartender after criticizing Ivanka Trump at the G20 summit in Japan.
“It may be shocking to some, but being someone’s daughter is actually not a career qualification,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote at the time. “It hurts our diplomatic position when the president calls and the world moves on. The United States needs our president to work in the G20. Bringing in a qualified diplomat can’t hurt either.”
In response, Morgan hit back at Ocasio-Crotez, writing, “It could be worse … Ivanka could have been a bartender 18 months ago.”
But the New York rep stood firm and responded, “The workers that GOP rejects as ‘just a waitress / cook / etc to see them.’
Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Republicans like to poke fun at the fact that I was a waitress, but we all know if they had to do a double, they’d be the ones crying in the walk-in fridge halfway through their first shift. . someone yelled at them for bringing seltzer when they wanted sparkling wine. “
The post drew criticism from Conservatives who tweeted their own stories of service jobs before entering politics.
“This is wrong,” Kasey Lovett, spokesperson for Dr Ben Carson, secretary of Housing and Urban Development, wrote on Twitter. “I was a waitress for over 5 years in high school and college. I’m a Republican and I cried in refrigerators like you. The difference between us? I don’t expect the gvt to provide me. my own dollar and support myself. “
In response to these criticisms, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Those Republicans tweeting with defensive rage” But you are wrong! I worked my way to pay in college !! “I don’t know they sound like people talking about the days when Hershey bars were 5 ¢ at the general store.”
