ELM GROVE, Wisconsin (AP) – Eight nuns living in a suburban Milwaukee convent died from COVID-19 last week, according to the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province.
A statement from the congregation says there are other confirmed cases of coronavirus among the 88 sisters living in Notre-Dame d’Elm Grove. The death of the eight nuns has occurred since December 9.
“All CDC guidelines are being followed regarding care for sisters affected by COVID-19 and to prevent the spread of the virus, including wearing masks, social distancing and hand washing,” the statement said.
The outbreak comes months after six nuns at Notre-Dame des Anges Convent in Greenfield died from the coronavirus in less than a month.
The Sisters of the School of Notre-Dame founded Notre-Dame d’Elm Grove in 1859 to provide an orphanage for children in the area, which later became a home for the elderly and sick sisters, according to its website.
